The Surfer's Guide to Free Software

Scribus:

Scribus is a full-featured desktop publishing (DTP) application (i.e. ideal for creating posters, brochures and flyers). Being a page layout application, it is different from word processors in the sense that it is concerned with laying out text, images and drawings with a much higher level of precision and control by the designer, which is not possible and sometimes not desirable with modern word processors.
Some of Scribus' major features include:
  • Creating high-quality press-ready PDF files for use in commercial pre-press.
  • Full support for CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) color used in commercial printing, including optional color management, color separations and importing spot colors in EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) files.
  • Creating fully scripted and interactive PDF documents using Python as a scripting language.
  • The latest version has introduced new objects called "rendering boxes" which, among other languages, allows to insert native LaTeX-equations.
